After negotiating some higgledy-piggledy lanes that wind up the sides of the so-called ‘Golden Valley’ of the River Frome, you reach the quaintly named village of France Lynch. There, almost at the back of beyond, you discover this picturesque traditional honey coloured Cotswold stone manor house perched on the valley edge – the views are great.
The name France Lynch has an interesting historic derivation. The last part comes from the medieval English word lynchet which means a terrace on a hillside. The prefix ‘France’ probably comes from the France Chapel, a meeting house in which displaced Huguenot silk weavers used to worship. It’s all super-historic complete with a 300-year old pub, The King’s Head, just up the road.
for 6-8 guests
There are three guest bedrooms that between them can sleep up to 8 people – perhaps a few more if you have small children in the party. The house itself has a rather lovely stone spiral staircase, beams & lovely stonework. It’s our entry range property so not as opulent as others, but it has everything you’d want for a very comfortable pampered escape.
All creature comforts
great and small
The house has been fully refurbished with great attention to detail from fine linen and bathrobes on the beds (and chocolates on the pillows!) to elegant modern bathrooms with lots of hot water. We have two sitting rooms, a dining room and rather nice kitchen where your private chef goes about his business, always happy for you to sit and watch with a cup of coffee or a glass of something more chilling and thrilling.
Hot tub aside the house has extensive gardens and lawns to the rear. To the front there is ample parking for those who drive, and a seating area for sundowners with a fire pit for cooler evenings.
Around & about
The Cotswolds is the biggest area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) in England or Wales, a 25 mile by 90 mile stretch of rolling hills that takes in six different English counties. It’s a bit like spending a few days as an extra in the cast of Larkrise to Candleford meets Downton Abbey.
We know and love the area and have made a point of discovering what we feel are all the ‘best bits’. For us that includes museums and castles, towns like Cirencester, Broadway and Burford, local breweries and vineyards, or a cream tea with polo and croquet.
Depending on how long you will be staying with us we will be delighted to drive you around the area (super-helpful for the brewery tasting!) and provide a guide to help you make the most of your time. When you book we’ll give you a list of what you can choose to do on the specific days you stay.
Alternatively, just stay put at home and we’ll look after you.
